A Clinical Review of Primary Jejunoileal Tumors




Abstract
Tumors of the small intestine are uncommon and heter ogenous. We reviewed twenty patients with primary tumors of the jejunum and ileum confirmed by surgery at the Department of Surgery. Paik Hospital, College of Medicine, Inje University for the
period
from 1984 to 1991. Tumors of the duodenum and ileocecal junction are excluded.
The ratio of male to female was 2.3:1 and the mean age was 52 years. The most common symptom was abdominal pain which were followed by bleeding, vomiting, abdominal distension, abdominal mass, nausea and indigestion. The accuracy of preoperative
diagnosis was 65%. The jejunal tumor was more common than ileal tumor and the benign was 6 and the malignant was 9 cases. All of five ileal tumors were malignant. Adenocarcinoma was the most common malignant tumor occurring in ten patients and
leiomyosarcoma and malignant lymphoma were found in two patients respectively. Segmental resection of small bowel was performed in 16 cases, palliative bypass (gastrojejunostomy & jejunojejunostomy) was done in 2 cases. right hemicolectomy was
performed
in 1 case and excision of polyp was done in 1 case. Actuarial 1-year survival rate of twelve patients with malignant tumor was 50% and 2-year survival was 25%.
